From today, NRC Handelsblad is the first Dutch newspaper to introduce an e-paper edition for iLiad e-readers. Subscriptions are auto-delivered wirelessly to the iLiad so the latest edition is waiting for the subscriber every afternoon. The e-paper edition of NRC Handelsblad contains all articles found in the print edition, including annexes and extras.
"There are quite a number of different e-readers on the market at the moment. Most of them are aiming at book lovers, but reading the newspaper on an e-ink device is a flexible and mobile solution", says Gert Jan Oelderik, publisher of NRC Handelsblad. "The introduction of an e-paper subscription allows us to experiment with distributing our content electronically. Right now only for the iLiad, but later on, other e-readers will follow."
Those who subscribe to the NRC e-paper edition will be the first to receive the digital newspaper. The newspaper will be downloaded using the iLiad's wifi capabilities. The download of each edition will take at about 20 seconds. In the near future, the e-paper will be refreshed more often than just once a day.
The NRC Handelsblad has selected the iLiad as the e-ink platform for its e-paper. The iLiad uses a high-tech e-ink display which can be used for showing digital content such as ebooks, documents and now the newspaper.
"We are very pleased with this partnership with NRC Handelsblad, using our technology," says Hans Brons, CEO of iRex Technologies. "This really connects with the need for up-to-date information, anywhere and anytime."
The digital content is created automatically. The software which converts the content has been developed by the Netherlands-based company SoliDAM. Onno Feringa, manager software development of SoliDAM: "We can now re-create the paper-like experience of reading a printed newspaper on the iLiad. We are confident that subscribers will adopt this technology soon."
